ed henry is in kent where the president courted university students today, but we begin with carl cameron in toledo tonight with the romney campaign. good evening, carl. >> reporter: hi, bret. mitt romney's campaign says he has been outspent and out advertised by the obama campaign. now the president inching ahead in the lead, well, challenger now playing catch-up. >> talk is cheap. you can be extraordinarily eloquent and describe all the wonderful things you can do. if you cut through the word, you look at the record. when you see the policies that have not created the jobs america needs, then you know it's time to choose a new leader, get a new coach, get america growing again. >> reporter: the crowd is raucous. in ohio and florida, must-win state in victory strategy, president leads by ten in ohio, according to the latest

quinnipiac poll and in florida he leads by nine. real clear politics average of recent polls has the president up five in ohio and three in florida. team romney dispute the public survey, argue they oversample democrats based on outdated 2008 results. pollsters deny it. romney political team insist the unpublished internal data shows it going to the wire. campaigning with the ohio native and golf legend jack nicklaus, romney blasted the president for big government spending. >> if he were re-elected i can assure you it will be $20 trillion of debt. the debt gets passed on to our kids. it's not just bad for the economy. it's not just bad for our job creation. it will in my opinion, it's immoral for to us pass on obligations like that to the next generation. >> romney'sry reserting the economic attack on the president as a new study shows median household income fell 1.1% in august to just over $50,000 a year. since june 2009, household income fell $5.7% and they are

down 8% since obama took office. romney's blunt assessment is everyone will share in the sacrifice to fix the mess and get people back to work. >> don't expect a huge cut in taxes, i'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. but by bringing rates down, we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people. >> romney's latest ad is just him, framing the choice. >> big government dependency, versus personal responsibility and liberty. >> we shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job. >> reporter: that in effect is romney closing argument that the country can't afford four more years like the last four years and the choice comes down to government dependency, versus self-sufficiency. closing argument for the last 41 days. bret? >> bret: carl, are you getting a sense that governor romney is listening to the critics and becoming more aggressive, that he has new messaging?

>> reporter: whether listening to critics or following the campaign strategy in last several days they made it more accessible to the press. liceer on the campaign trail. the response from the audience is visible. much more exciting. the aides say he is more confident and he recognizes in a matter of a week he will stand nose to nose with the president on the debate stage. that is likely to leave it to them and rest of the noise is up to voters on election day. >> bret: carl, thank you. the president is trying to shore up one element of his base that came up big for him four years ago. chief white house correspondent ed henry with the obama campaign. >> since early voting start tuesday in ohio, familiar script for president obama on his 29th visit to buckeye state. hitting another university this time bolling green to try to exploit his advantage with young voters. >> on october 2, which is just six days from now.

you get to start voting. >> reporter: the president is benefiting from the unemployment in the state being point lower than the national average. on an issue that is supposed to be romney's strength the economy, he is trailing the president. with the "new york times" cbs news poll on the question who can better handle it, ohio voters give president edge of 51 to 45%. >> i have woken up every single day doing everything i can to give american workers a fair shot in the global economy. >> there are danger signs. ceos now see slower economic growth for the rest of this year and have lower expectations for sales, capital expenditures and hiring. the chairman of the round table said in a statement that "down shift in quarterly sentiment reflects continuing concern about the strength of the recovery, including uncertainty over the approaching fiscal cliff." the report from mcanernj more significant since he chairs the president export

bret? >> bret: standing next to carl are you? it looks like carl's backdrop. ed henry -- >> very similar. >> bret: thank you very much. now to the international news. close circuit video of twin bombings at the headquarters in damascus. the first blas was 7:00 in the morning and may have been a diversion. the second came as a white van goes in the complex and then explodes. four army guards were killed in the blast. 14 wounded. one iranian tv reporter killed by sniper fire later in the day. experts say the attacks mark the closest the rebels have been able to get to the inner workings of the bashar assad regime. since the top official was killed months ago. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad pointed the finger at the usual suspects. the u.s. and israel in today's address to most of the united nations general assembly. correspondent jonathan hunt reports as you can imagine, not even was happy to see him. >> as around 1,000 people

trustworthy. you have the main stream medi media. the truth is in between. it's clear that many polls are oversampling and they look more like 2008 turn-out than we would expect. this applies to ohio and nationally as bell and see they are showing momentum in president direction. he picked up support among independents in the poll. good gauge to tell which way the trends of the race. and in this gallup poll, it's registered voters right now. it had been even. romney cited it on the stump and showed one of two polls tied. today it was 50/44 for president obama. i think ohio certainly is

trending toward obama. it's safe to say that right now. the national polls are showing some movement toward the president. >> bret: say for the sake of arguement that the polls are skewed toward president obama. what he is doing on the stump now, is it different from what he was doing? enough of change of message? winning formula to turn it around? >> he has to change the pitch on the stump. i don't think it's enough of a change to couner the potency of the 47% video that is part of the president stump speech. if he wants to win the presidency he has to campaign like polls are correct. if he doesn't win ohio and virginia there is a tight sweep to presidency to 270 for

him. florida, iowa, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. he is behind in a bunch of them. he has 40 days to do it. a lot of work outside debate. you can't gamble on that. being in ohio is bad news. >> bret: there are some republicans who say listen, it's actually, we don't want to be at this point. but there is something about being behind that would wake people up to say wait a second, we're behind. motivate the troops. the battleground polls, you have to say there oversampling aside he is trailing.

>> people are trying to explain away the polls. there is a consistent narrative in the polls. in the battleground polls. raising the path romney has to take, it doesn't look good. he is down if florida as well. so the question is what does it take? the problem is you're saying that romney campaign has to wake up but it seems to be a fundamentally flawed campaign. fundamentally flawed candidate. i'm not sure what they can do. midwest, people are supporting obama is the bail-out because romney opposed. >> bret: on the issue of deficit and debt, every poll suggests mitt romney has leg up on this issue. that the president does not seem to do well in pretty much every poll. these are the new ads that are just out. from mitt romney and the obama campaign. the first time romney looks in

the camera for one of his commercials. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle class families. the difference is my policy will make things better for them. we shouldn't measure compassion how many people are on welfare. >> romney paid 14% in taxes last year on over 13 million in income. almost all from investments. instead of attackk folks who work for a living shoulden we stand up for them? >> bret: i saw, steve, republicans today saying why is governor romney saying we both care about the middle class? if his case on the stump is president obama is letting down the middle class by not dealindealing with the deficit d debt? >> this will the b the 30th time i said this on the panel. i don't like it when the president says the president is a nice guy in over his head. then you have the romney campaign saying look, president obama is lying about what we've done. he has done this, this, this. chronny capitalist.

dissidents in message. romney campaign, they hear the focus groups and they have the suburban housewife outside of columbus who may have voted for president obama. doesn't want to regret her vote. micro targeting. sending the pitch to the voters. that is the opposite of what they need to do. we saw a softer message from the romney campaign in that ad. we saw a softer romney on the stump. i would do precisely the opposite. go bigger, bolder, make your case. on the bail-out question. romney hasn't mounted a defense. a great defense to be made there. washington insiderrism, give away to the unions and uaw. he would stop that. president obama engaged in it after he said he'd change washington. arguement to be made there but they're not making it. >> bret: iran's president stirs things up again at the united nations. does your phone give you all day battery life ?
